Well Roberta, where do we stathere are so many fashion options for women and they change constantly!

People make determinations about you in seven seconds or less.  You will want your visual image to convey professionalism at the very first glance!  With all of the options available today and ever-changing styles, it can be exhausting to stay on top of the fashion game.

Let's start with the fit - because people view you 40% more often from a rear angle than from the front, make sure that your clothing fits well – not too tight and never anything revealing from any angle.  Avoid any clothing selections that would be described as provocative.

That makes sense and that's a great statistic to know!

And remember, the top 12 inches down from the top of your head to your shoulder area is very much in view and scrutinized in those face-to-face interview moments.

Take good care of your skin and although wearing make-up is a personal choice, a small amount of powder and lip-gloss is considered a necessary finishing touch. Definitely don't overdue the amount worn.  Just keep it fresh, simple and color-appropriate.

And fragrance today can be a problem….

Yes, keep fragrance to a minimum!

And good dental hygiene is noticeable and fresh breath is a must!

What about hairstyles?

Choose a style that is professional which may mean to pull it back or wear barrettes.  You definitely don't want to be playing with your hair in the interview!

Another point on grooming - well-manicured hands with a neutral shade of nail polish is another must!

And shoes –  shoes and more shoes – what are the  correct choices….

Shoes need to be in impeccable condition – well heeled and free of scuffs. For   a professional look, a pump style shoe with no open toes is most appropriate.  And the professional heel height is between 2-3 inches, so no stilettos!

And the outfit – does it need to be a suit on the first interview?

In most instances, yes a suit will make the best first impression.  And the appropriate skirt length when wearing a skirt suit is no more than 2-3 inches above the knee. 

Are pantsuits acceptable?

Yes, pantsuits can be appropriate also.  There are various opinions on the type of suit to wear, so when in doubt, the skirt suit is a bit more conservative.

And what are the power colors today for women?

Pretty much the same as for men – navy, charcoal and gray with some fashion     colors of the season as a possibility on those 3^rd or 4 ^th interviews.

What is the equivalent of a man's shirt for women?

A crisp white blouse worn with minimal jewelry is a winner for the ultra conservative look.  And any top worn under a suit should never be revealing or button-popping!

On the topic of jewelry and accessories, what are your thoughts? 

Don't wear jewelry that makes excessive noise and avoid extreme layering such as a dozen bracelets, six rings, and multiple earrings worn all at once – less is definitely more!

Carry a quality handbag, briefcase or tote – just one!  And never bring along a backpack!

Hair ornaments, barrettes, clips, and headbands – select those items carefully and keep to a minimum size.

Anything you'd like to add…..

Yes, hosiery remains a must wear item in the initial interview.  Once you're hired you can make the appropriate adjustments to your wardrobe based upon the company dress code.

And finally, a classic look will always be in style and professional.
